Ask ADAM: The Expert Advice Q&A

English Ironstone:

I have a platter that measures 12 by 8 3/4 it is white and on the back it has Royal Ironstone China with crest W.H. Grindley & Co. England it also has a # 57. I have a pitcher and bowl also in white on the bottom of the bowl it says Royal Patent Ironstone Burgess & Goodard the number is 86. Can you tell me any thing at all? Thanks, C.Cranford

From: Merry Tobin, Pine and Proper Antiques
I am not an expert on Ironstone; however, I have sold a few pieces over the years. Generally it is English and late 1800s. The Grindley (according to Internet sources) is probably around 1890s and the Burgess around 1870s. I do not know when those factories quit making those pieces.

And from: Carol Silverman, Chelsea & Co. - Antiques & Appraisers
Ironstone is a term for hard, opaque earthenware. The "England" indicates a manufacture date after 1891; If the piece doesn't say England' it is earlier.
