Hi
Kisra,
Education is the start. I have a BFA in jewelry design and
construction and I am a Graduate Gemologist and it has taken
me over 30 years to get to this point - I am continually
taking courses for more information. Here are some web sites
to look for more information in jewelry, antiques and art
schools:
http://www.jewelersacademy.com/index.html
- American Jeweller's Institute in Portland, OR
http://www.geocities.com/~jdpn/schools.htm
- Jewelry Design Professional's Network good source for
education links.
http://www.penland.org/
- School of Design in NC
http://www.vcu.edu/ -
the Art School that I attended
http://www.artschools.com/majors-programs/#Jewelry
- list of art schools offering jewelry making courses
http://jewelrymaking.about.com/cs/education/
- classes in jewelry making on-line
Also
read all you can to become educated in your field of interest.
My library covers all the walls in my office - research
books are your best friends when it comes to appraisals
or just to price an item to sell.
Field
of interest is important - this needs to be the thing you
want to do for the rest of your life. And my feeling is
- if it's not fun, you will lose interest. I enjoy my work
with antiques and jewelry - it's fun to learn and the more
I learn the more I want to learn - so it just builds on
itself.
All
in all there's no quick fix - it takes work and dedication
to open your own business and keep it going. The keeping
it going is the hardest part - working at night and on weekends
- working when ever your customers need you. Dedicating
yourself to the goal to open your business takes time, but
the out come is well worth the effort. I have to personal
say that working for myself is much more fulfilling than
working for someone else. The rewards are great and the
feeling of accomplishment is great.
