Starting an Antiques Business in Maryland

Michelle wrote:
My name is Michelle and I am very interested in becoming an antique dealer, most likely in the Howard County area. Since it is such a specialized field, I'm having difficulty figuring out the steps I need to take before I can begin at a booth in an antique mall. Do you have this information or the contact information for someone who would? I'm very interested in getting started, but I would like to know how to go about it the right way (licensing and such). I would really appreciate any help you could give me.
Sincerely,
Michelle M.

Michelle:
Go to your local county government offices and apply for a Traders license. You will need to know the value of your inventory and will pay a fee for the license based on that figure. You will need to register the name of your business and they will mail you all the tax forms. They will be able to walk you through it. This site will help too -
Maryland Comptrollers Office.

Other question/answer about an Antique Jewelry Business has some good information and suggests: "Also museums in your area may have classes or lectures on the arts & antiques. Closer to "home" ie. Maryland & DC: George Washington University - Center of Professional Development - http://www.gwu.edu/~cpd/programs/CWAS/index.html "
